"Mastodon is just terribly optimized software in comparison to other server implementations of AP with similar feature-sets and holds way too much power over the entire fediverse. What's even worse is that despite its power, it takes the stable route of slowly adding minor features that aren't that necessary or really useful features that don't get used much because they're locked behind an unnecessary opt-in check that nobody looks for (I guess you can't avoid it due to the maturity and culture of the network and the whole relying on donations and independent contributors thing, but every other server complies with Mastodon's terrible federation quirks no matter what so whatever). GoToSocial, snac2 and anything else that's lightweight on resource usage should be used for single-user instances, anything like Mastodon is just overkill for that purpose and is just misleading interested server operators into worse options for the sake of compatibility and popularity."
